Boo.Com, the Failure

Universal BUSINESS; Boo. com, Online Fashion Retailer, Goes Out of Business By ANDREW ROSS SORKIN Published: May 19, 2000 It should follow the website fantasy content. Two youthful business visionaries devise a thought for the following large internet business Web webpage, raise huge totals of money, spend luxuriously on publicizing, lose cash on each deal, take the organization open and make each worker a very rich person. Today, Boo. com, an European design e-rear upheld by the French extravagance products head honcho Bernard Arnault, the Benetton family, Goldman, Sachs and Company and J. P.Morgan, among others, is wiped out and has been compelled to call the outlets, a half year after its Internet debut. The idea for Boo. com appeared to be conceivable enough. Ernst Malmsten and Kajsa Leander, two 29-year-old Swedes, established Boo. com here in 1998, intending to make an online style retailer that would offer worldwide support in seven dialects and different monetary standards. W hat's more, obviously, the site would utilize the most trend setting innovation. Boo. com gloated about its capacity to let clients see items in three measurements from 360 degrees, giving them a genuine feeling of how a piece of clothing looked.Investors were so taken with the thought and its two originators †Ms. Leander had been an Elite model and both had begun an online book shop called Bokus. com †that Boo. com was capable raise $125 million very quickly from a world class program of the amazingly well off. Before beginning Boo. com, the organizers advanced the site in exchange diaries and gleaming style magazines. In any case, it was likewise evident that the authors were too much aggressive. The organization set up its central station on chic Carnaby Street in London, with satellite workplaces in New York, Paris, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Munich. The staff extended from 40 at first to more than 400. Representatives routinely flew with every available amenity and remai ned in five-star inns, as indicated by a previous staff part. Many were given workstations and Palm Pilots for home use, as per this individual, and the organization utilized Federal Express to send customary mail. †They had next to no spending limitation, to put it mildly,† said Noah Yasskin, an investigator at the London office of Jupiter Communications, an Internet research firm. The site itself was additionally tormented by specialized issues and delays, and accepting twice the length foreseen to evelop. Once ready for action, it turned out to be certain that clients without quick associations with the Internet couldn't utilize the webpage, a point Boo. com gloated about. That e-self importance estranged clients with increasingly humble modem speeds, which happened to be the greater part of Europe and the United States, Boo. com's two most significant markets. †Ninety-nine percent of European and 98 percent of U. S. homes come up short on the data transmission expected to effortlessly access such animation,† Therese Torris, an examiner at Forrester Research in Amsterdam, wrote in a report. And anybody with a Macintosh PC couldn't utilize the site. While Boo. com later balanced itself to permit clients with more slow associations and Macs to get entrance, the progressions came past the point of no return. Deals for the initial three months of the site's activity were $680,000, while the organization was blowing through more than $1 million per month. The end came as Boo. com's originators, with just $500,000 left, battled futile to discover sponsor to furrow more cash into the site. ‘We are profoundly baffled that it has been important to solicit KPMG to become vendors from the company,† the prime supporters and financial specialists said in a joint proclamation. †The senior administration of Boo. com has put forth arduous attempts in the course of the most recent couple of weeks to raise the extra supports which wou ld have permitted the organization to go ahead with a reasonable arrangement. † Over the most recent half a month, Mr. Malmsten and Ms. Leander, who together own around 40 percent of the organization, had been begging speculators to pay more. As per a representative for Mr.Arnault: †He would not like to face the challenge. He would have been happy to remain included on the off chance that he could have had more control. † indeed, in a meeting in Paris a little while prior about his Internet property, Mr. Arnault wouldn't talk about Boo. com. Regardless of whether Boo. com's disappointment forecasts further issues for apparel e-posteriors is muddled. Yet, some Internet examiners said Boo. com's ascent and fall mirror a difficult that goes past simply selling garments. . †The showcase has woken up to the way that the measure of business e-posteriors like Boo. om create is a great deal lower than we anticipated,† said Tony Shiret, an investigator at Credit Suisse First Boston in London. †A key defining moment was what occurred in the U. S. over Christmas,† he included, alluding to numerous online retailers that announced missed deals projections. †It's been disillusioning. † On Wednesday, PricewaterhouseCoopers discharged a report foreseeing that 25 percent of all Internet organizations in Britain could debilitate their money inside a half year. All things considered, the issues at Boo. com issues were fairly self-caused, Mr.Yasskin said. †They attempted to do too much,† he said. †Opening up in various nations all the while is inconceivable. † One significant hindrance for Boo. com may basically have been the sort of product it was attempting to sell. †If you take a gander at fruitful locales, they are driven by price,† Mr. Shiret said. †It is difficult to sell garments at a cost base that bodes well without the scale. † Indeed, Boo. com never contended on value like most different retailers; it would have liked to charm clients with its intelligent administrations and convenience.Nonetheless, Boo. com may merit something, regardless of whether it is just a small amount of the $400 million worth its originators once credited to the organization. KPMG, which is dealing with the liquidation procedure, said today that it had gotten in excess of 30 requests. In a meeting with The Sunday Telegraph prior this month, Mr. Malmsten conceded he may have made slips up. †We have committed a few errors and we were late with our dispatch, yes,† he said. †But individuals are free to come 'round here into our workplaces and see what is happening now. †

Shelbys Amazing CPW Adventure

Shelby’s Amazing CPW Adventure This past weekend was the legendary Campus Preview Weekend at MIT and I was extremely stoked to finally visit. Not only was it my first time visiting campus, but it was also my first time in Boston/Cambridge. Here is a photo of me outside of 77 Mass Ave. (So this is where my application went.) I was instantly stunned by the campus and the intriguing architecture. I was especially awed by Simmons Hall, aka The Sponge. After getting settled in my hosts dorm at New House 2, I was pumped and ready to attend some fun events and classes. Before my escapade, my host and I took time to chat in the Office of Minority education, where I was able to get the scoop on MIT from other current students. The more I learned about MIT, the more I was certain that MIT is the perfect fit for me. This only made me more excited to be on campus. My CPW weekend was off to a great start. The entire weekend was action-packed and downtime was nonexistent. I could probably write a book about my CPW experience, but rather, I will highlight some of my favorite events of the weekend! The Stata Center. Another mind-boggling architectural masterpiece at MIT. On Friday I went on a UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program) tour at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research to learn about current cancer research headed by Dr. Robert Weinberg. It was interesting to know that our tour guide had an active role in this significant research, and the fact that I would have the opportunity to partake in research at MIT was exciting. I toured the actual laboratory, how cool is that? I even got all of my inquires answered. When the tour was over, I couldnt help but ponder upon when I will participate in research at MITby this point (Day 2 of CPW, mind you) I was already convinced that MIT is where I would be next year. Between Friday and Saturday, I attended three fairs: the academics fair, the athletics fair, and the activities fair. I collected all sorts of brochures and packets from everything that I was interested in. Just envision a fully-loaded, on-the-verge-of-exploding, drawstring bag and youll have a comparable image of what my bag was like after these three fairs. I walked table to table at these fairs and discovered so many, perhaps too many, clubs, sports, and academic opportunities that I found thrilling. The opportunities seemed endless, and for that, I knew at this point that MIT was where I would go to college. MIT will allow me to explore and develop all of my interests. I know that next year as a freshman, in addition to my classes, I may try water polo, play in the MIT Symphony Orchestra, and make time for the literary club. On Saturday I toured WMBR, MITs student-run radio station that broadcasts all over Boston. They showed me their music library, complete with innumerable CDs and records. I felt like a kid in a candy store, and the first bookshelf I rushed to was the one designated to artists that start with L to see which Led Zeppelin albums they had. In fact, the radio crew let me pick a Led Zeppelin song, introduce it on air, and play it. And that was my radio debut (there will be more of me on air next year at MIT, just a heads up). In case you Zeppelin fans out there are wondering, I picked Immigrant Song to play on air. Remember, I have only touched upon a few of the events because, as I said earlier, I could write a book about my CPW experience (and maybe I will, who knows). Attending CPW confirmed that MIT was the perfect place for me.

Generally, that is why people take drugs in the first place, because they act in the brain to get them high, enhance their mood, or cause hallucinations. Unfortunately for the user, most drugs not only affect the regions of the brain that makes them feel differently, they can affect other parts of the brain that are essential for functioning, learning, or remembering. MDMA, better known as ecstasy or Molly, is no exception. It acts on the neurotransmitters in the brain to give users an extreme alteration of their mood, but can also cause cognitive defects and loss of motor function. Serotonin, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine When someone takes MDMA, it causes serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine to be released from their neuron storage sites. This results in an increase in  neurotransmitter activity in the brain. The release of excessive amounts of these neurotransmitters by drug use can cause the brain to become depleted of these chemical messengers with many negative consequences. Serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine communicate information throughout the brain. They relay signals between nerve cells. Serotonin helps maintain a stable mood and other emotional functions and also is involved in the regulation of sleep cycles, pain control, and digestion, among others. Dopamine is a  transmitter is involved in regulating mood and focus as well as other central nervous system functions. Norepinephrine  is a neurotransmitter that is involved in the fight and flight response and in the regulation of mood, anxiety, sleep, energy and focus. It has been difficult for scientists to study the effects of MDMA use on the human brain because the imaging technology necessary to do so is not yet available. Therefore, most of the research into how MDMA affects the brain has been done with laboratory animals. However, the research that has been done has found that MDMA produces a  greater release of serotonin and less dopamine release that other stimulants like methamphetamine. Researchers believe that it is the release of excessive amounts of serotonin that produces the mood-elevating effects experienced by MDMA users. But, serotonin also plays a significant role in the regulation of sleep, pain, emotion, appetite, and other functions. When MDMA causes the release of large amounts of serotonin, the brain can become depleted of it and contribute to the unpleasant after-effects that many ecstasy users  experience after taking MDMA. Ecstasy (MDMA): Everything You’ve Been Afraid to Ask Long-Lasting Effects on the Brain Animal research has shown that the damage that MDMA use causes serotonin-containing neurons can be long-lasting. Measuring the long-lasting effect of MDMA use in humans has proven to be more difficult for scientists,?? but some studies have found that some heavy MDMA users experience: Long-lasting confusionDepressionWorking memory impairmentImpaired attention processes Changes in Brain Activity Some human imaging studies of Molly users have found that the drug changes activity in the brain regions involved in: CognitionEmotionMotor function Effects of Other Drugs Another difficulty investigators have had with evaluating the effects of MDMA use on the brain is that many times the ecstasy tablets users purchase on the street are not pure MDMA, but contain other drugs or substances. There is also the likelihood that ecstasy users are also using other drugs like marijuana or alcohol, which have their own effects on the brain. Therefore, it is difficult for researchers to determine if the effects they observe are from MDMA alone, the other drugs, or a combination of the two. Other Factors That Could Play a Role Along with the possible use of other drugs, other factors that could play a role in some of the cognitive deficits observed in MDMA users include:GenderDosageFrequency of useAge of first useGenetic and environmental factors Other Effects of MDMA on the Brain There are studies of long-term MDMA users that have indicated several other effects of heavy use of the drug: Global Form Processing: One study found that recreational MDMA use  affected the users ability to integrate local orientation information into a global form percept.?? Impaired Sexual Arousal: Because MDMA affects serotonin levels more than dopamine levels in some users, some researchers believe long-time use can cause impaired sexual arousal and the cognitive perception of romantic relationships.?? Impaired Impulse Control: Other researchers believe that, like many other drugs, MDMA affects the region of the brain involved with impulse control and therefore can contribute to the development of substance abuse disorders.?? Effects on Unborn Children There is some research that indicates that MDMA use not only affects the brains of the users but also the brains of the unborn children of the pregnant users of the drug. Animal studies have found significant adverse effects on learning and memory when exposed to MDMA during a developmental period equivalent to the third trimester in humans. Researchers are concerned about the potential adverse effects of MDMA on developing unborn children when female users of the drug who are pregnant continue to use because they mistakenly believe that Molly is a safe drug. Furthermore, while these are anything but difficult to compose, they are additionally short, so the peruser can assimilate the data quickly. One genuine model would be the 'relations hip' in which the gourmet specialist 'causes it to up as he comes' that incorporates the accompanying highlights: 'he starts with steak tartare with pâtés of anchovies, wild mushrooms, bacon, cornichons, and caramelized onions.' It at that point proceeds to depict the dish and how the culinary specialist takes it to the following level. However, despite the fact that this is a concise portrayal of the dish, the peruser can even now comprehend what is happening in the anecdotal universe of the cook and consequently can comprehend the story. Matthew Reynolds. Professor Jose Haro. Philosophy 100.

Matthew Reynolds Professor Jose Haro Philosophy 100 10 April 2017 Book I of the Republic Even though Book I of the Republic is a tedious and difficult text to get through, I did gain some insight from reading the text. What I got from reading Book I overall is that Plato’s argument is based on function to show that justice is virtue and makes the just person happy which makes justice valuable. I also got from the other attempts of defining function as Cephalus argues that justice is repaying debt and telling the truth, but Socrates’ counterexample shows that Cephalus’ definition is circumstantial. Polemarchus argues that justice is doing well to friends who are good and doing harm to enemies who are bad, but Socrates highlights that†¦show more content†¦Socrates begins by asking the old man what advice he has to give the youth. Cephalus regards his reliance on wealth as a condition which enables the good person to lead a life of justice. Socrates, which recognizes that justice is an attribute of the good person, still sees Cephalus’ view as only possible with sufficient material wealth. Cephalus is not a reflective person, it is obviously suggested when he states that a person can satisfy the requirements of a just and good life by possessing the right disposition and equipped with adequate wealth. But that is all that his life experiences have shown him and unlike Socrates, Cephalus is not a man for whom unexamined life is not worth living. Therefore Socrates’ response to Cephalus is not a direct confrontation. Socrates comments that the value of talking to old men is that they may teach us something about the life they have traversed. They may tell us the benefits of old age, however, Plato exploits Cephalus’ account of old age to suggest that old age is not a source of wisdom. The wisdom and goodness which enables Cephalus to see his age as a beneficial state need not come with old age. To most men, as Cephalus recognizes, old age is a source of misery and resentment. Only those who have order and peace with themselves can â€Å"accept old age with equanimity.† Cephalus argues that finding old age as a â€Å"good thing† will depend on whether you have the dispositionShow MoreRelatedStephen P. The Ethics of Genetically Enhancing Children Essays

Medical professionals today can screen for certain genetic traits (genetic diseases and sex) with in vitro fertilization and preimplantation genetic diagnosis to obtain a healthy child, and reproductive technology continues to improve. With this in mind, the question arises whether sex selection is ethical. Julian Savulescu, Uehiro Professor of Practical Ethics at Oxford University, argues that sex selection is moral, based on his ethical principle of Procreative Beneficence: that â€Å"couples (or single reproducers) should select the child, of the possible children they could have, who is expected to have the best life, or at least as good a life as the others, based on the relevant, available information† [Savulescu 1]. Savulescu claims†¦show more content†¦It reflects the values of a parent wanting the best for the child and also actively seeking out information to make a good decision rather than remaining willfully ignorant in the advent of new technology. In ad dition, well-being in human society is boosted. However, Savulescu has packaged sex selection into his very broad argument and made serious oversights. In a society without gender discrimination, selecting the sex of a child should, in principal, have no bearing to how â€Å"good† a life the child may have. Therefore, Procreative Beneficence should say nothing about which sex one should choose in such a society, or whether that choice even needs to be made. Preferring a child of one sex over another would then be discriminatory: one would be making a prejudiced choice for best likelihood for highest well-being based on an irrelevant consideration. Procreative Beneficence with sex selection then only returns discrimination to a society which has eliminated it. One may object this mild form of discrimination can be justified in a society that treats its born members in a non-sexist way. Steinbock believes there is nothing inherently immoral about sex selection. He reasons sex selection is, in itself, just a choice which is a parental right, noting that even if there is a correlation in some cultures between sex selection and oppression of women, this does not imply that sex selection causes the oppression or that eliminating sex selection will stop itShow MoreRelatedThe Ethics of Genetically Enhancing Children Essay1330 Words   |  6 Pages The term designer children is unnerving at first to many. Afterward, biodiversity suffers. Decomposers like leaf-cutter ants, termites, bacteria, and fungi live on the forest floor. These decomposers quickly turn fallen leaves and dead organisms into nutrients. This creates food for trees and other plants and animals. Today, we know that the soil of the tropical rainforests is thin and very low in nutrients. Decomposers like leaf-cutter ants, termites, bacteria, and fungi quickly turn falling leaves and dead organisms into nutrients. Plants take up these nutrients the moment they are available, so they don’t get a chance to enrich the soil. Keeping Tropical Rainforests Healthy Conservation of tropical rainforests should be easy. They have survived for millions of years. The trick to keeping them healthy is to not take too much too fast. This gives the rainforests time to recover from human activities like logging. Carving up the Forests Roads are cut through previously untouched rainforest to make way for logging trucks, mining equipment, and farm machines. These roads cut forest habitat into small pieces. This isolates the animals in those areas, which makes it harder for them to travel and find mates. One of the most damaging effects of development has been dividing the rainforest habitat into little patches of forest. This is called fragmentation. Today, many species are isolated in these small areas of forest because they will not or cannot enter open habitats. The result is that species such asorangutans cannot connect with one another to mate and have babies. Conservations Efforts

The Effect Of Highspeed Trains On Society Essay Example For Students

The Effect Of Highspeed Trains On Society Essay A major reason in favor of the construction of high-speed trains in America is to relieve airways and traffic congestion. First, delays at airports are costly. Larry Johnson, director of the Center for transportation Research at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, calculates that passengers lose more that twelve million hours each year in delays at O’Hare airport alone. In 1986, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airlines, delays cost five billion dollars, including two billion in extra fuel and labor cost, for the ailing airline industry. According to the FAA, relieving airport congestion will cost one hundred and seventeen billion over the next decade (Mobey 14). Transportation planners predict that freeways will suffer from unbearable gridlock over the next two decades. Their conventional wisdom maintains that the U.S. cannot build out of this congestion. The Southern California Association of Governments says that daily commute time, in the Los An geles area will double by two thousand and twenty and â€Å"unbearable† present conditions on the freeways will become â€Å"even worse†. By two thousand and twenty, drives are expected to spend Seve nty percent of their time in stop-and-go traffic, as compared to fifty six percent today. Similar predictions have been made for metro areas around the country. Yet the best alternatives that they can offer are to spend billions more on public transport that hardly anyone will use and to try to force people into carpools that do not fit the ways they actually live and work (Samuel p 1). Highway traffic is also costly. Maintaining the interstate highway system could run three trillion dollars over the next several decades (Moberg 14). Urban congestion is a hidden tax on the productivity and welfare of urban areas everywhere. In areas like Los Angeles and New York, this tax is eight billion dollars per year; nationally, about fifty six billion per year. In the next twenty ye ars, this insidious tax is projected to nearly double (Mallinckarodt p1). Bill Fay said,† Cars stuck in traffic waste more fuel and emit more pollutants than cars that are moving†(Dahl 4). High occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes are one of the primary tools used to reduce traffic congestion on the state highway system and improve air quality (â€Å"HOV Lanes in California †¦Ã¢â‚¬ p1). The usual goal of HOV lane restrictions is to provide overall congestion, and emissions reduction (Mallinckdet. p 1). However, in recent years, HOV lanes effectiveness in achieving these goals has come in to question (â€Å"HOV Lanes in California †¦Ã¢â‚¬ p1). When drivers use a highway, they do not pay the cost that they may be imposing on other drivers. Ideally, traffic should flow smoothly at the speed limit. However, as traffic increases, eventually the addition of one more vehicle will slow the flow and increase the travel time of other vehicles. At this point congestion (th e negative externality) begins (Dahl p4). Sen Daniel Patrick Moynihan said,† The train technology, offers great opportunities to reduce congestion in our surface and air transportation system† (Clough 9). Thus building high-speed trains would aid the problem of increasing congestion at America’s airports and on the highways. Environmental concerns have been raised with respect to high-speed rail. High-speed rail’s ability to materially reduce air pollution and energy consumption is dependent upon significantly reducing automobile and airline use ( Dahl p2). The FDOT’s (Florida Department of Transportation) projections, anticipate so few people transferring from autos and air that any air pollution or energy gain would be inconsequential. Further, construction of major infrastructure projects consumes energy. It has been estimated that San Francisco’s BART rapid transit system consumed more energy in construction than the future diversion from automobiles would save (Dahl p4). Burning fossil fuels, a process that expends approximately two times as much energy as it produces, generates most Florida electric power. Electric propulsion thus loses some of its advantage over fossil fuel propulsion (Jo hnson 2). Additionally French Champagne growers claim that high-speed rail embankments trap cold air, threatening their crops. A similar effect in Florida could make preservation of adjacent citrus crops more challenging (Dahl 1). However, students are now being educated on
